Hardcover. 8vo, 21cm, second edition, in 3 volumes, iv,315 & 356,(2) & viii,lxxxix,302.[2] pp., ads., in contempoary half tan calf, gilt decorated raised bands, gilt centre and border decorations in the panels, double gilt leather labels, double rule borders on the boards, marbled boards, endpapers and edges, some wear on the edges, small chip on the top corner spine edge of volume two, hinges worn but holding, engraved bookplate, a very good sound set, very scarce. (cgc) Captured while carrying out a survey of Russian America and Kamchatka, Captain Golownin (1776-1831) writes of a his two years captivity by the Japanese on the Island of Hokkaido. An astute observer, he writes all aspects of Japanese culture and traditions. Published in Russia in 1816, the book was noted as shaping Russian views on Japan for a whole generation. This also has added "An Account of the Voyages of Messrs. Chwostoff and Dawidoff" involving the survey of Russian America. The English edition also has an added Introduction in Volume 3, on the history of English commerce with Japan. ~ Cf. Lada-Mocarski. No. 82. Golovnin. [Voyage around the world] in Russian, 1822.
