1851 - Memoirs of the Opera in Italy, France, Germany, and England by George Hogarth, Secretary of the Philharmonic Society of London, and Honorary Member of the Philharmonic Society of Paris. A New Edition of the "Musical Drama" in Two Volumes ... Two Volumes in One. London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, Publisher in Ordinary to her Majesty. 1851.

This history of the opera is far more interesting than most. The author traced the origin of operatic performances and how the opera of one country affected the others. He has included information and details about the specific operas and performers of the lyrical stage. By adding anecdotes and insider details, he has presented a book for laymen and aficionados alike.
Condition: This original two volumes-in-one from 1851 has been professionally re-backed with new headbands and complementary end pages. While the spine is new, it has been blended with the original covers nicely...and the style of the spine matches the original. Original boards have corner bumps and edge wear as expected. Firm binding, foxing, personal copy, no inscriptions or other writing found. The first page of the table of contents has a small mended tear at the top as shown. Please request additional information if needed.
