A very good first American edition [Howes S-286].professionally conserved by Book Binders, Inc. of Sarasoota, FL (small label on rear pastedown). Rebacked, retaining the original black leather (with gilt stamping) spine and boards.Heavy rubbing to board edges and corners from shelf wear. Textblock tight and square.Mild foxing throughout, not affecting text. New, cream, textured endpapers. All maps and illustrations present, including 6 chromo-lithographs.833 pp. Octavo, 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches tall (textblock). Semmes, a lawyer as well as a seaman, was commander of the illustrious Confederate raider, the Alabama, and Weaver says his memoir is 'one of the really fascinating narratives in the history of adventure.' Besides being 'seven hundred pages of colorful incident and description,' the Semmes memoir is also a 'remarkably skilled' polemic that reviews in succession 'the nature of the American compact, the early formative stages of the nation, and finally… the question of slavery as it affected secession.'" --- John Chamberlain, quoting Richard Weaver (of U of Chicago)
