About This Item

1824. Praying for a General System of Bankruptcy. Praying for a General System of Bankruptcy. Philadelphia Businessmen Petition Congress for A Bankruptcy Law During the Panic of 1823-24 [Ralston, Robert (1761-1836)]. Memorial of the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Philadelphia, Praying for a General System of Bankruptcy. January 5, 1824. Read, And Ordered to Lie Upon the Table. Washington: Printed by Gales & Seaton, 1824. 4 pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Disbound pamphlet, light shelfwear and dampspotting. $50. * This was presented to the House of Representatives, 18th Congress, First Session. The first Federal bankruptcy act was enacted in 1800. Never a popular law, it was repealed in 1803. Claiming this would retard economic development, members of the business community campaigned to restore that law or enact a similar one whenever possible, especially when the economy was bad. The Panic of 1823 was one of these times, and it brought forth a flood of petitions such as this one. In the end the United States would not enact another bankruptcy law until 1841. OCLC locates 2 copies, one at the American Antiquarian Society, another at the Hagley Museum and Library. Shaw and Shoemaker, American Bibliography 18867.
