Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Cracking to front hinge with netting exposed. Binding loose. Small bookshop label to front pastedown. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing, fraying and tearing to spine ends and edges. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is slightly dulled. Some additional heavy marks and staining. Small hole in spine.

Green cloth cover with Blind stamped decoration to front & rear. Spine has blind stamped linear divisions with Gilt title in 2nd compartment. Fore and Bottom Page Edges untrimmed. 719 Pages, 690g, 7" Tall. Some wear to cloth, especially at corners. A few very small pieces of cloth missing around spine edges (see photo). Numerous cell & germ illustrations and interesting scientific instruments also illustrated. A large thick volume (1099 pages) inc useful index, plus 11 page publishers catalogue bound-in at the rear. Publishers dark green cloth, titled gilt on spine. Very minor wear to corners / edges otherwise has survived remarkably well. . Very Good. Hardcover. 7th edition. 1891.

J. & A. Churchill, 1901. Hardback. Very Good. Eighth edition hardback, 1901, with no jacket. Ex library book, only a couple of the usual stamps and markings, no pages removed. In overall very good used condition with only minor signs of age, handling and storage - boards a touch rubbed. Binding tight and appears little read. Internally clean, no annotation or inscriptions - previous owners name and address label to front pastedown; light spotting to page-ends but text and illustrations bright and clear throughout. This book is both large (215mm x 160mm, 1181pp plus publishers catalogue to rear) and heavy (2.5kg)

The work was a standard reference and underwent many printings over the years. Very well-illustrated, this edition having been expanded with additional topics including the use of the microscope in geology and with additional illustrations, earlier editions having only ten plates and much fewer illustrations. Of particular interest are the many illustrations of microscopes and related equipment, accessories. This chapter has a appendix on Numerical Aperture and Angular Aperature.
