A beautiful signed copy.Price jacket (25.00) is very fine. On May 2nd, 1981 shots rang out in one of Savannah's grandest mansions. Was it murder or self defense? Berendt's spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well bred society ladies, the turbulent young red neck gigolo: the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the " soul of pampered self-absorption" ; the uproariously funny black drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer, the sweet talking piano playing con artist; young blacks dancing the minuet at the black débutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. And if that is not enough, Kevin Spacey stars in a great movie adaptation of the book.

This book has everything one wants in a good read: A mystery, a terrific and unique geographical place, amazing and eccentric characters and a very well written story told by an excellent narrator and observer. Plus it is based on real events which if this were fiction--would seem unbelievable. The movie is a pale echo so do read the book and only see the movie for Lady Chablis's appearance.
