Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1929. Light gray cloth boards. Good Plus./Dust Jacket condition Good . SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author in her large pencilled block letters, covering 2/3 of the flyleaf and indented in the blank page below: ""To Mr. A.T. Wells A Knight in the Crusade to help the Blind of America With Christmas Greetings From Helen Keller December 1929."" Very nice and unusually lengthy gift inscription from Keller to a prominent recipient with reference to the social issue she was known for. Holiday greetings a bonus. Autobiography of Keller's adulthood, told with her signature charm, wit and feeling, and involving her many prominent acquaintances and friendships with the likes of Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, Henry Ford, Enrico Caruso, Thomas Edison, etc. 362 pages, index. Frontispiece portrait of the author with dog Sieglinde. Hardcover in scarce dust jacket. Jacket has some small chips and tears to edges, slight fading and discoloration to endpapers and top edge. Alexander T. Wells was a lifelong New Yorker, prominent New York attorney, and an active member and officer of the Lions Club for over 20 years. He was Governor of NYS District 20 in 1929-30 and moved up in the governance of the organization, eventually becoming Director in 1934-5 and President of the Lions Club International in 1939-40. He died suddenly in 1954. The Lions Club now has an annual Distinguished Service Award for dedicated humanitarian service named in his honor. His home in Queens was sold with contents, and the new owner stored his books and papers in the attic for many years.
