Very good, 1st edition, missing d/j, blue buckram boards with gilt spine titling and ruling; text block firm; pages untrimmed and unmarked apart from occasional light pencil underlining. Some light foxing on edges and sunning on endpapers.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Hemmings was Professor of French Literature at Leicester and wrote a number of highly respected books about Zola, in particular, this profile of his life and writing.
