Original double ruled calf with four raised bands, all edges red; rebacked in calf to style, new maroon morocco gilt-stamped spine label, original extremities worn. Blind stamps of prior ownership on title and elsewhere. Very good copy. CLASSICAL TREATISE ON THE ROMAN MILITARY AND WEAPONS. IMPORTANT EDITION FOR THE MILITARY HISTORY AND TECHNIQUE OF ROMAN. Nicely illustrated by Van Veen for the Plantin Press, established in Antwerp by Christopher Plantin (1520-1589), one of the most famous publishers of that great era of late 16th and 17th century printing in the Netherlands. He developed the characteristic floral, copperplate illustrations and engraving for title pages. After his death, "the business passed to his son-in-law Jan Moerentorf (Moretus) and continued on the same premises and in the same family for three centuries, when it was transformed into the Musee Plantin-Moretus."
