New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc.. Very Good-. 1961. Softcover. A scholarly examination of the 1637 pastoral elegy "Lycidas" by John Milton (1608-1674). The poem was written in memory of Milton's friend Edward King, who drowned at a young age in the Irish Sea. Though somewhat short in length (193 lines), the poem is considered one of the finest examples of English-language poetry. Most of this volume consists of critical essays on the poem by various knowledgeable writers. Also included is Milton's "Epitaphium Damonis", another elegy, presented here in the original Latin and in a translation into English by Helen Waddell. --- In blue wraps with image of Milton to front cover. A prior owner has left inked notations, a signature and underlinings, otherwise a tightly-bound, sound copy.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; x, 246 pages .
