London: Jones & Company, 1823. Two 32mo. volumes. (viii), xii, 268; (x), xviii, 201pp. Engraved frontispieces to both volumes. Each book bears a detailed fore-edge painting, skillfully executed with bright highlights and impressive depth, conveying the grandeur of Haymarket and Lombard Street, respectively. Their depictions of active London street life and commerce contextualize the publication even as they juxtapose nineteenth-century materialism with Milton's spiritually and emotionally fraught verses. Volume one is devoted to Paradise Lost and its index, while volume two contains Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes, and Milton's sonnets, psalms, and poems. Both bound in deeply grained midnight blue morocco with lyres blind-stamped to upper and lower covers, borders in blind and gilt spine and edge decorations. Some rubbing to corners and edges, else a near fine set of unique aesthetic value. A.e.g. Engraved frontispieces to both volumes.
