Toronto.: Canadian National Railways.. 1921.. Brochure 9 ½ x 4 inches featuring the Minaki Inn on the Winnipeg River in Ontario, Canada. Text extols the beauty of the region, the air, the water, the rising sun... "where perfect temperature is secured throughout the season...." Additional attention is given, in a single paragraph, to Holst Point Inn, "constructed of immense logs, chinked with grey-green moss...enhanced by the trophies of the hunt [heads of moose, red deer, caribou, etc.] which decorate the interior walls." Of particular interest is the brochure’s colorful six-panel pictorial map, over two feet wide, depicting the Canadian National Railways lines between Lake Superior and Winnipeg, with an arrow pointing to Minaki, north of Lake of the Woods. Brochure shows wear along the fold lines, none entering the map itself. Presumably a scarce brochure; no WorldCat listing has been found. Regarding the native population, the brochure notes: "The red men are everywhere, members of the once powerful Ojibway tribe. They make a significant contrast in cabin and teepee, to the white-folks in their bungalows and cottages. It is a contrast, too, between a weather-beaten old canoe, holding a numerous Indian family, and an up-to-date motor launch swiftly shooting over the waters. There is something pathetic about these original Canadians, who once thought the entire land was theirs in perpetuity, and who now find themselves corralled into reservations, as wards of the nation...." A brochure of considerable, and distressing, contemporary interest. .
