A small book measuring 5 3/4 inches tall by almost 3 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original leather-covered wooden boards. The binding is quite worn and stained. Chipping at the spine ends. The leather is chipped and is darkened on the rear cover (from having been damped) and is peeling up where it is chipped, revealing the wooden board beneath. The front pastedown is torn away, revealing the front wooden board. Lacks the clasp. Several signatures a bit sprung. There is a chip at the fore edge of the title page, affecting some of the lettering. The text is toned and stained. Bottom edge torn away from the bottom of the final leaf, but there does not appear to be text missing. Worldcat also notes 252 pages. Printed in "Old German" type. A scarce 18th century American Psalter written in German.

Salisbury, N.C.: Printed at the Watchman Office, 1863. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Fair. 8vo. 28 pages, plus index printed on rear cover. Soft cover affixed in a mid-20th century flexible board binder. The spine of the pamphlet is held into the binder by a black strip of book tape or some other material which we expect would be difficult to remove without damage. The pamphlet is soiled from handling, and the front and rear wrappers are worn and rubbed. Text is toned and has some finger smudging. Some of the pages are dog earred, especially at the front and the rear. No ownership notations. The front cover of the pamphlet reads, "Minutes of the Evan. Lutheran Tennessee Synod. 1863." The next leaf is a proper title page. The text is for a normal synod meeting or conference, and the bulk of the text does not mention the Civil War, but there are places it is mentioned. Page (2) has a listing of a few pastors and the numbers of their baptisms, divided by Infants, Adults, and Slaves. Mission work to the army is mentioned, and there is some reference to discussions on a new constitution. We assume this is the church constitution. There are 6 resolutions in reference to missionary work to the army ("Whereas this Synod is fully aware of the great necessity of doing something to supply our own soldiers in the Confederate Army with the preaching of the Gospel by our ministers...."). The final 18 pages is a sermon by David Henkel (likely of New Market) entitled "A Treatise, or a Few Fragments on Regeneration." A statement within the text resolved that 1500 copies of this would be printed, but it appears to be quite scarce. (Parrish & Willingham 8889)
