London: C. Lane; C. Moody, High Holborn, 1851. Stiff card. Very good. Consists of 10 hand-colored lithographic cardboard panels (8 with die-cut openings) connected by accordion-folded undyed calico; extends to 28 inches to form a "telescopic" peepshow of 8 compartments depicting the interior of the original Crystal Palace, with objects and figures, to be viewed through a round hole in the first panel. Issued in a slipcase with hand-colored label. Some soil especially to the first panel and the cloth bellows, but overall a very good copy. Without slipcase.
The peepshow depicts the interior of the huge Crystal Palace, built in Hyde Park of glass and iron, with the statues, trees and foliage brought in for the exhibition. After the exhibition, the Crystal Palace was relocated to Southeast London, where it was destroyed in a fire in 1936.
