About This Item

NY: Pantheon. Very Good in Good dust jacket; Top corners bumped, jacket grubby and has . several chips, one small water spot to jacket at center of spine.. [1951]. First American Edition. Hardcover. Yellow boards with title stamped in various fonts in black on front. Black cloth spine with title stamped in yellow. A comic classic of modern Irish literature, first published in England in 1939. Though Graham Greene championed the novel (his Pantheon front jacket blurb trumpets "A book in a thousand...in the line of Ulysses and Tristram Shandy." ) , and later book blurbs quote Dylan Thomas' mini-book review: "This is just the book to give your sister if she's a loud, dirty, boozy girl." ) , it was initially not a hot seller. All of the unsold first edition copies were destroyed during World War II bombings. At Swim-Two-Birds appears on Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels list, The Modern Library Reader's List of 100 best novels, and The Guardian's list of the 100 best English language novels. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 316 pages .

Synopsis

At Swim-Two-Birds is a 1939 novel by Irish author Brian O'Nolan, writing under the pseudonym Flann O'Brien. It is widely considered to be O'Brien's masterpiece, and one of the most sophisticated examples of metafiction. The novel's title derives from Snámh dá Én, a possibly apocryphal place on the river Shannon, reportedly visited by the legendary King Sweeney, a character in the novel.
