About This Item
Washington DC: Wm. W. Morrison, 1841. First Edition. Octavo (19.5cm.); publisher's dark brown blind-embossed cloth, gilt-lettered spine; xii,264pp. Light scuffing, else a Near Fine, straight and bright copy. Inscribed on front free endpaper "Hon. Judge Upham / with the highest respect of / the author." Most likely inscribed to George B. Upham, a vice-president of the New Hampshire auxiliary Colonization Society and a former senator. Ralph Randolph Gurley, secretary of the ACS, had travelled to England the previous year in order to garner support for the Society's project of sending emancipated African Americans to Liberia as an alternative to abolition. It would be on this trip that a break between the ACS and the British abolitionists would occur (see Ephraim Douglass Adams, "British Interests and Activities in Texas, 1838-1846 (1910), p. 56).
