About This Item
Monsarrat at Sea, Monsarrat, Nicholas. Published by Cassell and Company, London, 1975. First Edition. 8vo up to 9½" tall. 342 pages. Blue cloth boards, silver spine titles. Boards lightly bowed; tiny crack (1mm) back hinge. Binding remains firm and contents are otherwise fine without marks, tears or folds. Unclipped dust-jacket has light top edge ruffling; light, back cover tail end has short crease and taped portion with 4mm loss of top glossy layer.
"True stories (some lightly fictionalized) of Monsarrat's sometimes nightmarish and grisly North Atlantic stint as a Royal Naval officer on convoy duty in WW II. The collection includes three complete memoirs--H.M. Corvette, East Coast Corvette, Corvette; the stories ""H.M.S. Marlborough Will Enter Harbor,"" ""The Ship That Died of Shame,"" and other pieces; and a vivid chunk from his autobiography, ""Monsarrat--sailor, surgeon, scribe, sexton."" Aside from the not included The Cruel Sea, by far his most impressive and humanized effort, the pieces arranged here are his sea works most likely to endure". KIRKUS REVIEW Aug. 25th, 1976.
