About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,ex-public library,1st edn thus.FINE+/FINE.No owner inscrptn but a price-clip to dw/dj.An ex-public library book,so no owner inscrptn - but a red+green inked 'WITHDRAWN FROM PLYMOUTH LIBRARY SERVICES' library stamp to front free endpaper and white paper security(?) label pasted to front pastedown - both of which could stand sympathetic replacement - these are the ONLY public library notation/indications to the entire book.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, colour photographic illustrated dw/dj - seascape to front and author's portrait colour photograph to rear, with b/w lettering; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present - just a miniscule rub with reciprocal loss to front, lower corner.Inevitable sunning/fading - as usal/normal - to spine/ backstrip of dw/dj.Head+foot of spine/backstrip of dw/dj minisculely bumped with reciprocal creasing, and a tiny, tiny snick to head of same too.Top+fore-edges bright and clean - no foxing/ spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.Bright, crisp, clean, publisher's sharp-cornered,original,plain blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, stamped silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and near immaculate plain white endpapers - aforementioned library notations excepted. Both head+foot of spine/backstrip exhibit some light sunning/fading to those edges.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus,4-342pp [paginated] includes 7 sections/chapters,bibliographic sources to rear; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, contents list/table,7 section separator pages and 2pp blanks at rear.Described honestly and fairly - even as an ex-library book, with the listed imperfections - it is still in exceptional condition and state.
Monsarrat is unquestionably the finest writer on the war at sea to emerge from the dark years of 1939-45.'The Cruel Sea' established his world-wide reputation as a novelist, but he had already made a name for himself with three short books, written during the war, describing life aboard the corvettes in which he served in the Battle of the Atlantic.
This book collects together all his writings on the sea with the exception of 'The Cruel Sea' itself. It will be treasured by all who have a touch of salt in their blood and will introduce to a new generation some of the most dramatic literature of the sea ever written.
The contents are: 'The Longest Love,The Longest Hate','Three Corvettes' [comprising H.M.Corvette,East Coast Corvette and Corvette Command.],'I Was There','A Ship to Remember','H.M.S. Marlborough Will Enter Harbour','It Was Cruel' and 'The Ship That Died of Shame'.
