[Butte, MT: n.p., ca. 1900]. Oblong 8vo. 5 x 7 in. silver gelatin photo mounted on gray studio boards, sized 7 x 9 in., w/ pencil annotations on verso. Nice crisp photograph of the Meaderville smelter near Butte, MT which processed copper mined from the Leonard and the Colusa mines near Butte as well. By this time the B&M’s quick expansion required far more capacity so the company had already built a large updated smelter in Great Falls, MT, drawing upon the power generated by the Black Eagle hydroelectric dam.

Description:
[Butte, Mt, 1899. Very good.. [7]pp., two typed and five handwritten sheets, plus four sheets with scratch arithmetic and two business cards. Previously folded. Light wear. Seven notices of assessment on stock in the Salmon River Mining & Smelting Company, two typed and five handwritten, dating from 1897 to 1899, addressed to Leo Gramling, a local taxidermist in Butte, Montana. The Salmon River operation worked claims in Idaho beginning in 1881, and was headquartered in Butte. The fact that the Secretary of the mining company was H.C. Gramling does not seem coincidental. Also with some scratch calculations of assessment payments and business cards for Gramling's taxidermy practice and a Gramling real estate business in Salt Lake.

Description:
Butte City, 1887. Very good.. [3]pp., on a bifolium. Signed in manuscript. Light tanning. Scare report of an 1887 meeting of shareholders in the Black Pine Mining Company, whose subject was the imminent failure of the Butte, Montana, mining venture. The root of the problem seem to have been a failed bond issue, which attracted only a minimal number of subscribers and raised just $21,000. The report proposes the sale of all company property and the formation of a new company in which current shareholders will be able to maintain their current level of ownership via additional investment amounting to a further twenty cents per share. We locate only one copy of this interesting announcement and resolution, at Yale.

Description:
[Virginia City, Mt.]: Montana Post Print, 1864. 7 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches. Slight wear. Very good. A very early piece of Montana printing, and a record of mining in the region. According to McMurtrie, the first printing press in Montana is believed to be that brought by Francis M. Thompson to Bannack in the spring of 1863. This press was followed a year later by the arrival at Virginia City of "more consequential printing equipment." This Virginia City press was run by Marion M. Manner, and printed the MONTANA POST and the present mining receipts. This same press produced the first printed book in Montana, the mining LAWS OF FAIRWEATHER DISTRICT, in 1864. The printed receipt here is signed in manuscript by Robert Hill, Recorder of Madison County, and dated in early 1865. On the verso is a manuscript note from the claimant, Francis R. Bill, transferring the claim to another party on March 2, 1865. An engraved image of an Indian is in the left margin, and "Territory of Montana" is printed in large,… Read More

Description:
Frisco, Id, 1897. Very good.. Eighty-five documents, mostly autograph letters, signed, totaling 103 pages, almost all on some version of Helena & Frisco Mining Company letterhead. Original mailing folds, occasional minor foxing, smudging, or light staining, many with secretarial stamps reading "Received" or "Answered." All letters sleeved in chronological order in two three-ring binders. An informative collection of correspondence almost exclusively written by Joseph MacDonald, Manager of the Helena & Frisco Mining Company at Frisco, Canyon Creek, Idaho to D.P. Patenaude of the A.M. Holter Hardware Company in Helena, Montana. A handful of letters were written by other officials of the two companies, including two letters on stationery featuring the company's original name, the Helena & San Francisco Mining Company, both dated 1890. The present letters are largely concerned with the machinery and equipment necessary to operate a mining company in the Far West in the last decade of the 19th century.… Read More
