About This Item

This is a stated first US edition of Montgomery of Alamein, a biography of the controversial military genius Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976). It was written by the British politician, army officer and historian Lord Alun Chalfont (1919-2020) and published in 1976. It a personal biography, not a military one, although there are maps of battles, and lots of photographs.

Montgomery was the most successful of the WWII Allied Commanders. He never lost a battle, whipped Rommel to turn the German tide, and was the idol of his troops. He had a terrible personality—vain, callous, and generally ill-natured. This earned him loads of enemies who, throughout his life, did their level best to stain his reputation. Regardless, he remains one of the greatest military men in history; the Allies would not have won the war without him.

This book is in excellent shape. The unclipped dust jacket has a few tiny tears, which you can tape. The book is brown boards with brilliant gold lettering on the spine and almost no shelfwear. Inside, the pages are yellowed but it is otherwise perfect.
