New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1868., 1868. First edition. First U. S. edition. 8vo. Publisher's original light brown cloth, [2], 223, [3, blanks] pages. Frontispiece (included in pagination) and in-text illustrations throughout, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, boards with blind-ruled borders; all text block edges trimmed. minor wear to the spine ends and corners, tiny bruise to upper spine portion of front cover, internally clean and tight. Very good, tight and attractive copy of a book regarded as "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels" (T. S. Eliot, quoted in David, The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, p. 179). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
