Hardcover. Fair. S Briscoe, London, second edition, 1693; small 8vo, pp [xiv], 147, [3]; full calf, spine gilt but badly rubbed and with two or three small pieces missing; covers rubbed, one corner with an old repair and the others worn; lacks a small strip from the top of the title page; front hinge a little weak; tight, apart from the front hinge and overall a decent enough but much used copy. The first edition was published during Mackenzie's lifetime, in 1665. Known as "Bloody" or "Bluidy" Mackenzie on account of his fierce persecution on behalf of Charles II against the Covenanters, the presbyterian movement of significant importance in Scottish history. Mackenzie was appointed Lord Advocate in 1677 and so responsible for implementing the policies concerned. Not supporting the so-called "Glorious Revolution" of 1688 which overthrew James II in favour of William of Orange he then retired from public life.
