Hood River Orgon, 1928. Mount Hood Railroad Company: July 1928. Issued at Baker, Oregon by J.W. Pentney, auditor, in the amount of $5.35 to B.B. Powell (Hood River, Oregon) and endorsed by hand by B.B. Powell. Punched cancellation, not affecting signatures. Crisp, clean condition. The Mount Hood Railway Company was established in 1906 to transport men and materials to the logging camps and mills of the Upper Hood River Valley (Oregon) and to transport lumber back down. Eventually area fruit growers also came to depend on the line, and it was a popular means of transportation for locals and tourists. Because three miles of the route is on steep a steep grade the locomotive had to push the train in reverse to negotiate the incline, giving rise to the nickname "The Backwards Railroad." The train, the line, and the 1911 depot have been restored and rides are once again a tourist attraction. EPHEM 2458. Very Good Condition.. Ephemera.
