New York: D. Appleton and Co, 1866. Hardcover. Good. x, [1], 10-296, 3-8 p.; 24 cm. Publisher's dark green pebble-grain cloth with gilt-stamped spine title "Buchanan's Administration." Blind-ruled border on each board. Pale yellow endpapers. Publisher's advertisements on 6 pages following text. In pencil on front free endpaper: Patterson. Bookplate on back fixed endpaper indicates that the book was given to the Washington County Historical Society in 1911 by D.F. Patterson. Although this book was published without the author's name on the title page, the Preface is dated Wheatland, Buchanan's home in Pennsylvania. James Buchanan (1791-1868), the 15th President of the United States, was considered a "doughface" during his presidency, meaning that he was a Northerner with Southern sympathies. Today he is considered to be one of the worst presidents because of his failure to address the secession of seven Southern states. This failure led to the beginning of the Civil War shortly after the end of his term in office. At the time he was widely blamed for the war, which was sometimes called "Buchanan's War." In this work, he sought to defend his actions (and inactions). In Good Condition: ends of spine and corners fraying; cloth separating from from head along back joint; discoloration on lower spine; cloth slightly soiled; back hinge split; occasional soiling and pencil notations on pages.

[Civil War] Ten Clipped Civil War Covers Featuring Pro-Union and Anti-Confederate Images. [No publication information] [Circa 1861-1865] Each clipped portion of a civil war cover (envelope) is approximately 8 x14 cm. Some age toning and light stains. Colors are vibrant. They do not appear to have been mailed. Very good.Although done by private companies, these patriotic envelopes served as propaganda for the Union and were purchased by those on the home front to send to their loved ones serving in the war or by those serving in the war. These feature various images including American flags. Cannon. Dogs and Cats among others. Would make a great display.

Baltimore: William H. Purnell, 1866. Pamphlet. Good. 7 p.; 23 cm. In March 1866 William H. Purnell (1826-1902), who had been appointed postmaster of Baltimore by President Lincoln in 1861, was up for confirmation to a post, possibly assessor of internal revenue for Baltimore. The only objection to him was a charge that he had made a speech at a Democratic and Conservative meeting in Oct. 1865. He offered this reply, explaining how he happened to be present when a speaker denounced President Johnson for his actions toward the southern states after the Civil War ended and consequently intervened to prevent violence. He also offered a statement covering his vigorous support for the Union during the war. Scarce. In Good Condition: soiled and creased; closed 1-cm. tear from fore-edges; solid.
