London: Bradbury, Evans and Co, 1866. 1st Edition Thus . Very Good Minus. 6.75 x 8.25 inches (17 x 21 cm). Maroon full calf leather binding by Zaehnsdorf. Boards have triple gilt fillet border, gilt decorated turn-ins. Spine has five raised bands, leather title and author labels (both chipped), gilt decoration to compartments. Some marking and scuffs to boards, slight wear to corners and head of spine. Good solid binding with no cracking to joints. All edges gilt. Unusual red and white checked silk pastedown endpapers. Original cloth covers mounted and bound in at the end of the volume. Fine chromolithograph frontis, numerous illustrations within the text. Clean text throughout. A typically high quality binding from Zaehnsdorf. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 6.75 x 8.25 inches (17 x 21 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: xx, 190

Bradbury, Evans, London., 1866. First edition with these illustrations. Square octavo. pp xx, 190, [10] adverts. Colour frontispiece and 60 black-and-white drawings by Charles Keene. Forrest Reid referred to the book as "Keene's masterpiece" and Gordon Ray included it in his list of the hundred best illustrated books published between 1790 and 1914. Period binding by Zaehnsdorf of full red polished calf with raised bands, gilt decoration, rules and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.Rebacked with backstrip relaid and retaining the endpapers. Spotting to bottom margin and verso of frontispiece. Rear cover partially faded. Corners of covers a bit bumped. Very good.
