In 1836 the barque Stirling Castle was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef and the crew and the captain's wife cast ashore on the coast of what is now Queensland.Captured by stone age aborigines of rude habits and cannibalistic tendencies Captain Fraser was speared to death and other members of the crew disposed of in various ways.Mrs. Fraser,a lady of genteel upbringing, was stripped naked by her captors and made to perform exacting and humiliating tasks as slave to the tribe.Having lately given birth in an open boat to a baby which was immediately drowned, she was forced to mother an aboriginal child which she described as "one of the most deformed and ugly-looking brats my eyes ever beheld." A remarkable rescue by an Irish convict, who had lived among the natives as the "ghost" of a dead warrior, may or may not have saved her from "a fate worse than death".Mrs. Fraser's subsequent misadventures and impositions in England add an intriguing finale to a fascinating tale. This is a true story, supported by documentary evidence, behind one of the great Australian legends.
