Original cardboard slipcase with title "Tang Li Xian Mu Bi Hua" in Chinese characters on front. Slipcase slightly rubbed and bumped at the corners. A few light foxing. Very good condition. Illustrated with 50 loose photographic plates, this historical album shows the murals of the tomb of Li Hsien (Li Xian), the son of T'ang Kao T'sung (Tang Gaozong), LiChi'in (Lizhi) and Wu Chou's Empress Wu Tse Tien (Wu Zetian), it offers us some historical materials for the researches of social system, political thoughts, as well as lives and customs at that time. These murals are of great value for research and offer rich, new materials for the research of the development of Chinese ancient painting. Four groups murals were painted on the walls of the passage. On the east wall counted from South to North in proper sequence were "Scene of Hunting Procession", "Guests-entertaining", "Procession of ceremony and guarding", as well as "The green dragon". On the west wall just opposite the east were "Scene of Polo-playing", "Guests-entertaining", "Procession of ceremony and guarding", as well as "The white tiger". The mural of Tang dynasty inherited and developed the traditional techniques of painting since Warring States period, Han and Wei dynasty, and reached a new, prosperous step in absorbing the useful elements of foreign arts through continuous practice of creation. The museum houses over 370,000 items, including murals, paintings, pottery, coins, as well as bronze, gold, and silver objects.
