Description:
The Polar Publishing Co, 1911. Cloth. Good. 1st Edition; xx, 604pp, illustrated, frontispiece, plus 49 b/w photographic illustrations. Original brown pictorial cloth lettered in gilt. Cook's original purpose in exploring the region west of Greenland was ostensibly to organize a hunting expedition. Just north of Etah, Cook decided that conditions were good enough for an assault on the North Pole, and set out on his journey over the sea ice with two Eskimo companions, two sledges and 26 dogs. Cook is one of the most controversial figures in the history of polar exploration. His supporters claim that he was the hero of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, the first to climb Mt. McKinley, and the first to stand at the North Pole (allegedly only four days before Robert Peary). Others insist that Cook faked his claims to both Mt. Description:
New York: Polar Publishing Co, 1911. 1st (US) edition, large 4to, 604pp, photo illustrations; all plates present as called for although the plate listed as facing page 200 is in fact facing 202; the head of the spine has had a repair carried out on an L-shaped tear, pretty successfully ( see image); there are some signs of wear to all extrems but nothing very serious; the image to fr board is sound as is lettering; previous owner's name and address to ffep; by and large this is a respectable example of a big book that rarely travels well and is most uncommon; G/VG Copy, no DJ; NB This is a large heavy book well outside the preset postage tariffs; however for simplicity this item has been priced accordingly and no extra postage will be required unless buyer wants overseas sending. Overseas, which includes Europe and the Republic of Ireland, both surface and air, would be expensive. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
