New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1962 Yale University Press, New Haven, CT. 1962. Softcover/Trade Wraps. First Paperback Edition. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but a F/O name on the title page. Book Condition: Good; light wear to head, tail, tips, and edges; shallow crease on rear wrap; rubbing to panels; several paint spots on the front wrap. No DJ. Pictorial card stock wraps. Wraps are not bent or folded, spine has light creases but is not split; text is secure in binding. 270 pp 8vo. This is writer/journalist's account of his blindness following two retinal detachments in 1943. He covers his reorientation, not as a blind man, but as an ordinary individual retaining his place in his competitive world of writing. There were the days of panic, then weeks of adjustment to the physical and mental aspects, and the loss of independence which was the hardest to take. Then the joy of regaining independence with the acquisition of Wizard, the Seeing Eye dog. Predominating the story is the attitude with which he faced the world of people rather than the world of things, refusing to conform to the world's conception of a blind man and his resentment of organizations which isolate the blind, emphasizing and exploiting their infirmity. The material about the Seeing Eye, the doctrine of independence and the rejection of tragedy, the training of man and dog, is unfailingly fascinating. This is a story or anyone with later life blindness especially for the blinded of the war, and those in contact with them. A clean presentable copy.
