About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.[A presentation ink inscrptn: 'PPSA Yachtsmen's Dance 1978 Presented by Tony Dyer Assistant Queens Harbour Master' to verso of half- title page.] VG/VG.Owner's inked name to top,left-hand corner of front free endpaper's reverse and price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,matt,blue+black author's portrait (him looking through a sextant) illustrated front panel of dw/dj with white lettering to front and spine/backstrip,rear panel with publisher's advert for other similar published titles; all with some inevitable shelf-wear,bumping and creasing to edges and corners - but no major nicks or tears present. Both head+foot of spine/backstrip of dw/dj minimally and minisculely bumped, rubbed and chipped - but with miniscule loss to same.Top edges coloured red and with some very minimal dust-soiling,fore-edges minimally and sporadically foxed/spotted; contents though are bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain dark blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt printer's device to front, lower corner, and bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip also and immaculate dark blue+white ocean map illustrated endpapers.UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,6-196pp [paginated] includes acknowledgements, author's introduction with his facsimile signature,20 sea tales/stories by 17 assorted authors as diverse as Hilaire Belloc (2 tales),Joshua Slocum (2),Conor O'Brien (2),William Bradford,Robert Falcon Scott,Sir Ernest Shackleton and Erling Tambs amongst others; plus [unpaginated] half-title,title page, contents list/ table and 4pp blanks at the rear of the book. Here is an intriguing collection of sea stories chosen by one of the greatest small craft seamen of all times, who had gained the habit of reading adventure books when he was too delicate to join in the fun and games with other children.
He introduces each extract with points of interest and escorts the reader on a voyage among the seas of the world, with each story told by an author of distinction who also knew the sea at first hand. The tales include adventures in British home waters, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Mediterranean, but most of all the Southern Ocean, especially in the area of Cape Horn, which has ever offered the severest test of all the seas.
Rough seas are described in plenty, but there are calms too, including the ordeal of the doldrums. Most of the adventures are in small craft, similar to his own little Lively Lady;but he set himself no limit in size or type of craft,so long as the story inspired an understanding of man's problems when striving to achieve his purpose upon the sea. These problems are ageless,so his selection is concerned with the adventure rather than its date.
One common theme which runs through the book is the sea,and the other is the quality of writing by a score of different writers. Please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! ** N.B. UK and all overseas buyers please note, stocks' actual shipping/P+p costs are adjusted and any difference is refunded, after order receipt and before the order's despatch, especially if item is offered P+p included or postage free.
