[Conrad p. 306, Spence 294]. Lars Christensen (1884-1964) was a Norwegian Whaling ship owner with an interest in Antarctic exploration. Christensen sold a ship to Shackleton that was renamed the "Endurance". He also financed and participated in several expeditions to Antarctica on mapping and surveying the coasts by ship and airplanes. Between 1927 and 1937, his expeditions discover new lands that continued to add to the knowledge of Antarctica. This 1936-37 expedition focused on aerial surveys and coast soundings. Mrs. Christensen and his daughter were also part of the expedition and Mrs. Christensen became the first woman to fly over Antarctica.

Steve Fossett (1944-2007) was a successful commodities trader and an adventurer that set world records in balloons, sailboats, gliders and unique powered aircraft. His 2,000 + book collection included significant and authoritative accounts of aeronautics, polar, Asia, Australasia, circumnavigation's, mountaineering and others. In 2007, Fossett disappeared on a solo flight in a light aircraft over the eastern Sierra Mountains along the California and Nevada border. The wreckage was found by hikers a year later along the rugged Mt. Ritter range in the Ansel Adams Wilderness in Madera County, about 10 miles east of Yosemite National Park.
