About This Item

New York:: Random House,, (1999.). Hardcover first edition -. Fine in fine dust jacket.. First printing. While Irving starts this memoir with an account of his obstetrican grandfather, and includes an essay on the politics of abortion, this is primarily an account of his involvement with the movies, from thirteen years of working on the screenplay for The Cider House Rules (which of, course, has as its central focus the issues surrounding abortion, and for which he won an Oscar) to the unsucessful attemtpts to get his first novel, Setting Free the Bears, made into a movie. Interesting discussion on the differences between a novel and making a film. 170 pp plus 32 pp of photographs.

Synopsis

John Winslow Irving was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1942. He is the author of nine novels, among them A Prayer for Owen Meany and A Widow for One Year. Mr Irving is married and has three sons; he lives in Toronto and in southern Vermont. From the Hardcover edition.

Reviews

On Feb 1 2009, Hazelwood_Booksellers said:
John Irving, one of the great writer's of the modern era, with literary classics to his credit such as: 'Cider House Rules' and 'The World According to Garp', brings the full force of his prose to a memoir of his thirteen years in Hollywood, bringing his classic, 'Cider House Rules', to the silver screen (via four different directors.) Irving also details two of the other movies made into -- but not from -- his novels: 'The World According to Garp' and 'Hotel New Hampshire'. As well, he delves into his failed efforts to make his original debut work, 'Setting Free the Bears', into a motion picture. This is an intricately insightful memoir of the learning's in the differences between writing a timeless classic, and turning it into a movie. A generously illustrated autobiographical account of one of America's most rightfully renowned novelists. A must have, must read for the lover and collector of all things Irving.
