About This Item
London: George Manwaring, 1861. First edition. Cloth. Good Only. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The first edition of Alfred Austin's response to criticisms on his work, illustrated with a portrait tipped in to the front endpaper. The first edition of this work. This work is a response to the critics who had written negative reviews about one of Alfred Austin's earlier works, 'The Seasons: A Satire', written in the form of a poem. With a plate showing a portrait of the author tipped in to the front endpaper. Written by Alfred Austin. Austin was a poet, and was appointed the Poet Laureate in 1896. Despite this prestigious title during his life, his poems are little remembered today. His other works include 'The Golden Age: A Satire', 'Grandmother's Teaching', 'The Human Tragedy', 'The Door of Humility', and more. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little discolouration to the spine and extremities. Some minor marks to the boards. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Front hinge has failed. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots. Good Only
