About This Item
London: Vizetelly, 1888. Uchard (1824-1893) was a French dramatist and "man of letters." His erotic and romantic novel has also been published as "French and Oriental Love in a Harem." This is the First Edition in English (translator unknown). Blue decorative cloth binding, with cherubs and nymphs on the front cover; the spine features a Turkish quarter moon; decorations filled in black and gilt. Clean text; 339 pages, with two pages of publisher's adverts in the front; rough-cut edges. Many illustrations by Paul Avril. Exterior shows some wear, with rubbing and a bit of fray; corners have been bumped; spine has a bit of fade, but all lettering is still bright. Hinges are split, but still holding. Certainly a curiosity, an example of the fascination with "exotic" Arab culture that swept Europe in the 19th Century. In a plastic protector. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. First Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Paul Avril.
