New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 310; 304; 299 pages. Hardcover bound in original red cloth with cover designs embossed in black and with spine designs in black and in gilt. The binding is worn and bumped with some pale spotting and soiling from handling. Rear cover unevenly sunned. The spine is toned and has some fraying at the spine ends. There is a small nick or hole in the cloth of the spine. Early owner's gift inscription on the front pastedown reads, "Wm. H. White, Jr. / From his Papa / June 9th, 1896." A paper label beneath this notes that the family lived in Norfolk, Virginia. Another family member has signed the top of the front flyleaf. The father, William H. White ( 1847-1920), graduated from VMI in 1867 and was a district attorney and president of a railroad, likely Norfolk & Western). The text of the book is a bit toned but generally clean. Contains a number of full-page illustrations.
