London: The Hansom Cab Publ. Co., 1888. Hardcover. Good + overall. The classic Australian "whodunit"; highly regarded throughout the world as one of the most successful detective stories of all time. One hundred and twenty-fifth thousand, hence an early English edition, probably 4th impression. (1st Aus. edition 1886). The book has a complicated publishing history. But this coppy will be prior to 1890 A nice copy in slightly faded original purple cloth without the original wrappers or advertisements. Sml. 8vo, 230pp, page one with a small collection of old ink spots. Gilt title along the spine, extremes a bit rubbed. A nice copy.

Synopsis

The Mystery of a Hansom Cab  is a mystery fiction novel by English writer Fergus Hume. One of the earliest pieces of detective fiction, the book was first published in Australia in 1886. Set in Melbourne, the story focuses on the investigation of a homicide involving a body discovered in a hansom cab, as well as an exploration into the social class divide in the city.
