London: W.H. Allen & Co, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo (152.4mm x 241.3]. Cloth. Gilt dragon embossed on front cover. Top edge gilt. [6] 407 p.p. Colour Frontispiece, plus ninety-three in-text illustrations of dragons, sea-serpents and other mythical and extinct creatures. Vignette of dragon with a dog head on title page. Ownership colour bookplate on front free endpaper. Light rubbing to boards, with wear to edges, corners. Fraying at spine-ends and rear joint. Two small tears along edge of front free endpaper, plus two closed tears previously repaired with glue. Some underlined passages in pencil. Otherwise in very good condition. Contains chapters on Remarkable Animal Farms, Extinction of Species, Dragons, Sea Serpents, The Unicorn, and the Chinese Phoenix. Charles Gould [1834-1893] was a member of the Royal Society of Tasmania and Geological Surveyor he launched lead three expeditions into Tasmania.
