Scott Momaday, or “Tsoai-talee”, is a 7/8 Kiowa Indian born in Oklahoma but raised in Jemez, New Mexico . Both his parents were teachers and taught at the Jemez Day School for more than a quarter of a century ... He attended a variety of schools in and around Jemez and when time came for him to go to college he says he had been attending “second rate schools because I live in remote areas,” so he decided, to transfer for his senior year to Augusts Military School in Fort Defiance, Virginia. After matriculating there he returned to New Mexico and attended the University of New Mexico in Albueuerque and graduted with a major in English. He then embarked on a career of teaching and later of writing. He taught at many of the University of California campuses, and also traveled abroad. During the 1990s several books by Momaday were published. He eventually returned to Jemez and to his parents’s old home where he now writes and also teaches at Tucson.
