Includes cast list and period advertisements. The play introduced the word "robot" to the English language and to science fiction as a whole. It premiered in Prague in 1921 and was translated from Czech into English by Paul Selver in 1922. The American première was at the Garrick Theatre in New York City on October 9th, 1922, where it ran for 184 performances, a production in which Spencer Tracy and Pat O'Brien played robots in their Broadway debuts. London first saw the play at St. Martin's Theatre on April 24th, 1923, a production that included Basil Rathbone as "Harry Domain". Capek first utilised the word 'robot' (from the Czech robota) to refer to a mechanical humanoid machine, displacing older words such as "automaton" or "android" in languages around the world. Karel Čapek named his brother Josef as the true inventor of the word. Isaac Asimov,… Read More

London: Constable, 1930. Hardback. Very Good. Uniform English Edition". 8vo, pp. [vi], [390], [2]. Fawn cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Extremities bumped, bands of sunning to top and bottom edges. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, review clipping laid in. Else, clean and tight. In the original muted brown paper dust jacket: price-clipped, spine gently sunned and creased, head of spine frayed, wear to extremities. Still, a pleasing copy. Very good/ very good. Unusual in the trade. Originally published in 1916 by John Lane in New York and London, Constable's new edition featured an additional four plays, 'Phantasmagoria,' 'The Court of Progress,' 'The Dream' and 'The Hand of the Potter'. The laid in review draws attention to the cinematic facets of the playwright's work: "Mr. Theodore Dreiser's collection of plays is a reminder of the films' continuous and increasing influence upon the theatre. This influence is neither wholly good nor wholly bad; its effect depends upon the innate quality of… Read More

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1963. First U.S. edition with scarce wraparound band reading " 'DUTTON EDITION IS SUPERIOR'/ Harrison Salisbury - NEW YORK TIMES." This edition translated from the Russian by Ralph Parker whereas the edition published in the U.S. the same year by Frederick A. Praeger was translated by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley (the Praeger precedes this one per Fiene). Harrison E. Salisbury's January 22, 1963, review reads in part: "Of the two translations neither comes close to reproducing the rough vigor of the author's concentration camp slang .... However, Ralph Parker's version in the Dutton edition is superior to the patchwork thrown together by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley for Praeger. The most striking blooper of the Hayward-Hingley translation is to put in the mouths of the prisoners the phrase 'Comrade Warder.' The prisoners were forbidden ... to call the guards 'comrade' ...." 8vo light gray-green rough cloth boards stamped in green on front and spine; top edge stain… Read More
