Description

1836 Captain Back Narrative 1ed Arctic Expedition Voyage Indians Eskimo MAP Fish

"one of the finest travel books of the 19th-century" (Howgego)

Captain George Back was an 18th-century British naval officer known for his arctic voyages. Back accompanied John Franklin and his Arctic expedition but it was his own Back River Expedition, beginning in 1833, that he is most remembered. The details of this three year long voyage are reported in 'Narrative of the Arctic Land Expedition', a highly desirable work filled with impressive illustrations, maps, and engravings.

This 'Narrative' illustrates Back's interactions with Eskimo tribes, his commerce with the Cree, Chippewa, and Coppermine Indians, hunting in the frozen tundra, geological and geographical features of the Arctic, and an interesting account of the aurora borealis.
