About This Item

Providence: H.H. Brown, Printer, 1830. Full Leather. Fair/No Jacket. The discourse has a copyright date of 1829. Two volumes bound as one, with the discourse also bound in at the rear. Full calf leather. 120, 108, 40 pp. A first person account of the travels and preachings of Eleazer Sherman. While primarily centered around his travels in New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Sherman also recounts his trip to Darien, Georgia. Upon his arrival he contends it is a wicked and blasphemous city with little religion. Sherman also provides his impressions of the enslaved people and slavery in Georgia, recounting the brutal whipping of one enslaved person and the conversation with another older enslaved person, who briefly mentions his former life in England. In FAIR/GOOD condition. Moderate scuffing and uneven darkening to the leather, with minor soiling and a few small spots of staining. Extremities scuffed and worn at the corners. Head of the spine pulled with minor splitting to the leather. Interior solid with the second blank endpaper missing its upper half. Some pencil scribbles to the endpapers and title page, with a few scattered scribbles in the first part of the text. Minor scattered soiling throughout, with moderate foxing to the paper and a few minor stains. Last several pages of the book with a heavy dampstain in the gutter, affecting some of the text. Previous owner's bookplate and signature present. Sabin 80357. Howes S399 (1832 edition).
