About This Item

Edmonton & [Rutland, VT]: M.G. Hurtig & [Tuttle], [1969]. Thick tall 8vo. xx, [2], 768 pp. Colour frontisp. (bound in upside down as usual binder’s error), 10 colour plates, 19 black & white plates, 4 large folding maps in rear pocket. Red silk, gilt & black spine labels, w/ d.j. F/F copy, preserved in original slipcase. First Hurtig facsimile edition of this famed memoir exploring the Coppermine River and the coast eastwards as far as Cape Turnagain, revealing the extreme hardships overland from the Arctic coast including starvation, death, and even cannibalism. The kindliness and generosity of Akaitcho and Yellowknife Indians stand in contrast to many of the Europeans in the expedition.
