Second Edition. (Published the same year as the first.) Pp. xvi, 248. Appendix showing the documents relating to the surrender. Fold-out chart of "Basque Roads and the Three Entrances to the Port of Rochefort." Contemporary three-quarter brown leather binding with marbled boards. Morocco label and gilt rules on spine. General wear to extremities and some minimal foxing, dust soiling to top edge. Small ink stamp name of a previous owner on the front pastedown. Very Good. In a clear, removable archival mylar jacket. After the Hundred Days, the Corsican ogre had requested (and expected) to be transported to exile in the United States. Happenstance led to Maitland intercepting Napoleon at Rochefort-sur-Mer, near the Bay of Biscay. He and his retinue of 33 were held on Maitland's ship for 30 days while the British determined his fate. Thus, prior to being transported to St. Helena, Maitland and Napoleon shared many repasts, by which the Captain became thoroughly bewitched by Napoleon's charm.

Description:
Henry Colburn, 1826. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Includes map. Beautifully rebound in handsome quarter leather, with raised bands to the spine. Signed by James Smith in the early pages. The boards are a touch rubbed, with the spine discoloured, but they remain otherwise strong and sturdy. Internally, there is a previous owner's signature and ex-libris sticker to the front end page along with a small embossing to the title page. A piece of text that was tipped into the front end page has been mostly removed, although some remains in the centre. There are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are otherwise neat, crisp and complete. In very good condition indeed, considering the age of the book! JK.
