Works Issued by the Hakluyt Society series. The Hakluyt Society was established in 1846 for the purpose of printing rare or unpublished voyages, travels and naval expeditions by those who first explored these unknown and distant regions. The majority of these illustrate the history of the great age of discovery which forms the foundation of modern history. Publications were distributed only to members of the Society. xx, 259 pp. Frontispiece - folding map (A Draft of N. Polar Discoveries) & 2 other maps (one folding). Contents: Introduction; Narratives: Sebastian Cabota, Sir Martin Frobisher, Master John Davis, Captain George Waymouth, Master John Knight, Master Henry Hudson, Sir Thomas Button, James Hall, Captain Gibbons, Bylot and Baffin, Captain Hawkridge, Captain Luke Fox, Captain James. Appendix: Shipping, Dutch Voyage, Waymouth's Expedition, Prices, First East India Subscription List, Variation of the Compass & Draft of North Polar Discoveries. Both hinges cracked. Inscription of previous owner - "H.W. Gore Booth, Yacht Kara" of Lissadell House, Co. Sligo, Ireland on top of title page. Sir Henry Gore Booth was a renowned arctic explorer and this volume formed part of the library he kept on board. Text clean. Yellow eps. Short splits developing (C .5 inch) at top and bottom of spine at edges. Top and bottom of spine bumped. Corners bumped and lightly rubbed. Bound in blue cloth boards of the Hakluyt Society with gilt lettering on spines. Gilt vignette of the sailing ship 'Victoria' on front board. Blindstamp decoration on boards. Some light patches of browning on boards. Overall condition VG.
