About This Item

(London: L. Reeve & Co., 1876). 8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. (xii) + 336 + 16; 2 chromolithograph illustrations, incl. frontis.; 4 hand-coloured lithographs of Natal plants; 8 original mounted photographs; 2 maps, incl. folding. Corners a little turned; occasional fox spot. A very nice copy. (Mendelssohn I, p. 195; Hosken, p. 27) A clear window on all features of the wild colony in the years immediately preceding the Anglo-Zulu War. "The contents comprise chapters on the geographical position and character of the country, its geological formation, climate, wild animal life, indigenous vegetable productions, early history, British colonisation and rule, and social progress and prospects. There is an account of the rise and growth of the Zulu power; and the descriptions of the flora and fauna, together with the beautiful coloured lithographs of Natal flowers and shrubs, taken from the author's original paintings, show him to have been a competent naturalist and botanist, as well as an artist of no mean ability. The work is further illustrated by a number of photographs, and there is a map of the colony, and a chart showing the harbour of Durban and the surrounding country." - Mendelssohn I, p. 196 .
