New York: Hurd and Houghton , 1870. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This book is clean, tight, square and internally unmarked, but there is a name on the ffep and a second 1875 name on a later fly leaf. It is lightly soiled and rubbed through at the edges of the boards to rounding at the corners. It has pale yellow end papers and 201, bright, clear pages illustrated with black & white drawings (mainly technical in nature) in a one-quarter binding with green cloth and faded gold titles. The boards are covered in tan cloth.

(xv) 201 pps. 10 plates of engraved diagrams. Frontis portrait of Read is lacking though tissue guard is present. Extremely scarce work describing the life and work of Nathan Read, whose mechanical inventions of steam power systems for steamboats and railroads were vitally important to the development of the modern transportation systems of the 19th century. Presumably a deluxe or presentation binding. A tight, internally clean copy, the vellum lightly soiled and some minor scuffing to the spine lable, scuffing to the marbled paper of the boards. Prev. own. vintage bookplate.
