The Holy Bible with an Abridgement of the Commentaries of Scott and Henry, and Containing Also Many Thousand Critical and Explanatory Notes Selected from the Standard Authors of Europe and America. The Commentaries Condensed, and the Whole Edited by the Late Rev. John Eadie, D.D., LL.D. Professor of Biblical Literature to the United Presbyterian Church. Fully Illustrated with Photogravure, Coloured, and Half-Tone Plates, Comprising A Series from Original Paintings, by Celebrated Old Masters, and Eminent Modern Artists. Also Copyright Photographs of Scenes in Bible Lands, Maps, Family Register, Portrait Album, and the Lord's Prayer in Fourteen Languages, Etc. Etc." Lovely fine binding of Black leather with inset central oval to cover containing title in gilt, ornate inset borders to front and rear covers. Four raised bands to the spine with gilt title "Holy Bible" in the second compartment. Complete with the original Brass corner pieces and clasps in full working order. All edges gilt. Condition very good, the binding has been professionally restored at some point and is sound with new end-papers, the leather is a bit dry and cracked on the spine and the binding is a bit rubbed at the extremities, still very attractive. Internally in suprerb condition, there are a few spots to the edges of the preliminary pages, the Concordance is toned, other than this the pages and plates are incredibly clean throughout. There are many many superb colour and sepia toned illustrations, including reproductions of works by the old masters, maps etc. There is a splendid extra engraved title page, main title page printed in red and black, colour pages for family register and family portraits, a sheet in red of the Lord's prayer in 14 different languages, photographs of scenes from the Holy Land, tables of Weight and units of measure time etc. Chronological Index, Biblical Cyclopaedia - Concordance etc. There are a few entries for the Kendrick family from 1890-1938 in the family register. At the rear of the Bible is The Psalms of David in Metre, Allowed by the Authority of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland. A really clean and complete example of a lavish luxurious Victorian Family Bible. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
