The Indian sub-continent has experienced several natural and anthropogenic threats in various aquabodies comprising freshwater, estuaries, brackishwater, coastal and Marine Water systems. This has affected the Fish Fauna dwelling in such environments, as well as the fisheries for production offish from culture and capture fisheries. We have had the experience of the several Earthquakes (one immediately after independence in 1950 in the north-eastern part of the country, recent earthquakes in Gujarat) cyclones (such as the super cyclones in Orissa and along the Andhra Coast), Tsunami (in the south-east coast in 2005), floods, drought as well as the indiscriminate killing and Fishing of gravid and Juvenile Fishes poisoning the water, poaching, use of pesticides, weedicides, polutants from industries, Agricultural waste, all of which have greatly affected the concerned aqua bodies, fish fauna and fisheries at large. This special release, containing 30 articles from resource persons working in different national Institutions of the ICAR, and Universities of the country, deals with different hazards and threats on the fish fauna from two Biodiversity hot spots of the country, viz. North Hast India, and the Eastern and Western Ghats, their Effects on fish and fisheries of the Country which are included in inland, estuarine, brackishwater, coastal, marine, mangrove, wetlands and certain main River systems, viz. the Brahmaputra and Ganges system problems on shrimp farming, cage culture and migration of Hilsa after the Construction of the Farraka barrage, ecological disruption and long term effects of tsunami etc. This special release on Natural and Anthropogenic hazards on fish and fisheries was compiled in conformity with the focal theme, ""Planet Earth"" and the Symposium of the section Animal, Veterinary and Fishery Sciences on ""Natural and Anthropogenic hazards on the conversation and the Management of Biodiversity"".
