Natural History of British Butterflies Vols I & II

by F W Frohawk

Condition: Good/No Jacket

LONDON: Hutchinson and Co., 1914 A good copy of this classic and authoritative work - dating from 1914 but not published until after World War I, with 60 colour printed plates and 5 b/w white plates. Vol I with 34 colour and 2 plain plates, 207pp; Vol II with 26 colour and 3 plain plates, 206pp plus listing of subscribers at the rear. In the original blue cloth boards and printed on good quality paper, with decorative initial capitals. Both bindings have a little pulling, bumping and general wear to edges and corners. Vol I is slightly shaken with a spine lean. Both have very slight marking to the back board. Internally the endpapers have some small marks which look like the residue from sellotape perhaps used to seal down a protective wrap (more to Vol I than II); Vol I has a portrait of Frohawk pasted onto the fep; and Vol II has a little general marking to endpapers. The text and plates are generally very clean and in good to very good condition. A previous owner was clearly a butterfly enthusiast because there is a plate from The Entomologist and a note on butterfly observation loose in Vol I. Vol I has a paper flaw crease affecting pp 105-7 (105 has a small repaired tear at the base of it); and there is some spotting to the top margin of p 203 and the final text page. Vol II has a little spotting to the top corner of p89.
