EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1839 A good copy of the first edition of Dogs Volume I - volume IX of Mammalia, Jardine's Naturalist's Library, in the original publisher's cloth binding. This volume covers the wild dogs including wolves and foxes. With list of volumes; half title; engraved frontispiece portrait of Pallas; vignette title page showing 'the dogs of Mr St Bernard'; two further title pages; advertisement from the publisher; contents listing; Memoir of Pallas; appendix; text; publisher's advert; and 30 hand coloured and 1 black and white plate (of dog skulls) bound at the rear. The binding has some chipping at the top and bottom of the spine, with slight loss and the corners are bumped. It is otherwise clean and in good condition. Internally there is a bookplate of Francis Hemming to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents are in good to very good condition. The paper of both text and plate pages has some light toning particularly to edges and contents slightly shaken. Plates are tissue-guarded (the tissue guard to the first plate is browned and with crumpled eges) and in very good clean condition.
